Chapter Eighteen
I pry my eyes open and spots dance across my field of vision. My head feels like it weighs a thousand pounds, and it throbs in time to my pulse.
Trying to get a feel for my surroundings, I blink the black dots from my vision. A few dingy bare light bulbs hang overhead, and I’m lying on a smelly stained blanket on the floor. There are some boarded windows high up on the right wall, too high up to get to them without standing on something.
To my left a single folding table is set up with a few hand tools laid on top of it.
The bulb that hangs above my head is smudged with dirt and gives off hardly any light. Even with my enhanced vision, I can’t see a thing. I roll over and push myself up so I’m sitting with my legs straight out in front of me. And every muscle in my body aches with the movement. The cold cuffs around my wrists are tight, and I can’t wiggle out of them.
I figure Diesel has me locked in one of his warehouses, away from prying eyes.
My dragon coils in anger. She wants blood.
We will have it, today, I assure her.
“Look who’s awake.” Diesel steps out of the shadows as if he’s been there the whole time, watching—waiting for me. Pompous asshole. “I’ve been dreaming of this day, Rory. This exact moment… when I would have you trapped and in the perfect position—”
“So that you can kiss my ass?” I’m seething.
I try to summon my magic, straightening out my hands and pointing my palms to the ceiling as best I can. The magic starts to pool in my hands, but it stops. My magic is being restrained by the cuffs. Damn it. I move, trying to get an edge.
“Tut, tut, Rory. That’s not the way you speak to your superior.”
I spit at him. “You’re not my superior. I’m not a Spectre anymore.”
“I know. You’re a magical shifting dragon now. The irony!” He tosses his head back, laughing. “You can struggle all you want, but I’m not stupid enough to have you here without suppressing your magic. You won’t be going anywhere, thanks to my new toy locked around your wrists.” His tone is mocking. I hate it. I want to blast him and wipe the gloating smile off his face. “I got them just for you and Irena. By the way, where is your sister? I thought she’d be with you at the restaurant.”
“Die, Diesel.”
“No. Don’t think I will. But I know there’s a whole globe of humans who will be affected by the new and improved bio-weapon that Kinsley made. This will finally wake them all to the danger your kind poses.”
I’m boiling with rage. When I get out of these magic-dampening cuffs, he’s going to wish he was never born. At least Irena isn’t here, shackled beside me. I hope my sister is safe, wherever she is. But she’s a smart woman who can take care of herself.
